SOMNIA-SPECIFIC QUESTIONS
1. Dreams are how Sleep chooses you. What might draw your character into Somnia— a wound, a wish, a weakness? Would they follow the dream, or run from it?
for seonghae, it’s probably going to be a wish. she works for a hypercapitailst pharmaceutical company whose morals she disagrees with, and yet she remains there with this as the reason she cites for being there. at the current time we don’t really know what that is yet, but from the sounds of it, it’s important enough for her to continually risk her life for.
as far as whether or not she would follow the dream, i think she’s the type who would. her profession as someone who explores darknesses (which is similar in concept to dreams in certain ghost stories) she knows to be cautious about it, but she also understands the value in that risk if she thinks it’ll get her where she needs to be.
2. Somnia is a slow unraveling—of worlds, and of selves. How does your character respond to fear, transformation, and losing control? Do they fight, adapt, collapse?
seonghae is the type to do the first two. if fighting does not work then she will adapt, but it’s not her first option. fear is something we don’t really see her be affected by, and transformation is something she witnesses quite often in daydream inc. and even she’s not immune to that.
her capability for adaptation is likely what’s gotten her as far as she has within her company. she’s among some of the upper teams and considered a veteran explorer. with how long she’s been with them, corruption and contamination is a constant companion that she’s probably grown quite familiar with. as mentioned later, this purposeful contamination of the self is even something she uses as a survival method at some point in the story.
3. Connection is the only constant. What kind of bonds does your character form— fast and burning, slow and wary, deep and desperate? How might that shape their time in this world?
she makes her connections fast, always a little too quick to make her assumptions of people after initial impressions. this can be considered a flaw, of course, because she can be quite stuck in how she deals with people based on the impression they’ve made on her.
for people she thinks are good and kind, she’s warm and friendly and will go to great lengths to make sure they’re taken care of or are at least safe.
on the other hand, she’s likely to get cold when dealing with someone who does not strike her as a good person and can be extreme in that side of things as well, even going as far as to endanger or kill them herself should the situation call for it.
it’d mean she would immediately start sorting people in her head upon meeting them. the interesting part about having her meet others in this setting is that there’s less need to go to the extremes that she usually experiences. people wouldn’t really be going around killing others to survive, so she would be more amicable even with an extreme sense of justice.
4. What are two major forces in your character’s personality that are often in conflict? (Ex: logic vs emotion, power vs guilt, obedience vs rage, etc.)
selfishness and perceived selflessness.
she's a self-centered girl, which is probably born of her difficulties emphasizing with others, but she also sees herself as a force of good that corrects wrongdoing and does so to an enthusiastic degree. she likely understands emotions and feelings as a concept and can feel them to some degree, but reading it off of others is something she seems to do differently and it is greatly affected by her own preconceptions, ideals and thoughts without real regard to others.
‘doing it for their own good’ or ‘i think this would make them happy’ without input from them, more or less.
VESSEL SELECTION
Which Vessel Type are you choosing: Token or Offering? offering! Why does this Vessel type feel appropriate for your character? leaning into dehumanization for survival is inherently different than being corrupted by an external force. the latter is more typical in her series, but the former is something that is explored but not usually done by anyone outside of the protagonist (soleum).
in later chapters, seonghae is shown to have accepted a form of contamination in order to survive because she'd seen it as a way to get insight to the ghost story she's trapped in, as well as a way to help any potential rescue as she'd have some control over her actions and can situationally sway the story in ways that benefit the party because of how ingrained she is with it. that's not how that works 1:1 in somnia, but she's most certainly the kind of character who'd easily lean into it more than stubbornly cling to humanity.
Choose one OR list three subclass options within your chosen Vessel type that you think would suit them: trickster
INSPIRATION: Gumiho malevolent, predatory and feared in comparison to the huli jing and kitsune. failure is permanent for them in mythology with no path for redemption, and discovery results in punishment or death.
they: test boundaries expose vulnerability embody forbidden desire
COMMON TRAITS (A TRICKSTER will not have all of these, but may express any combination or traits not mentioned that still fit the monster type. Customize as desired.)
• Shifting or unstable form — fur, skin, or size may flicker without warning • Eyes that gleam with mischief, glow in darkness, or change color when lying • Prehensile tails, whiskers, or ears that twitch in response to hidden truths • Can mimic voices, faces, or even other monsters in brief flashes • Feet leave no tracks or leave deceptive ones entirely • Speech may come in riddles, laughter, or layered voices • Innate ability to vanish, phase, or appear where least expected • Scentless or marked by a strange, dreamy perfume • Movements may be jerky, too-smooth, or puppetlike • Often collects masks, charms, shiny objects, or stolen names
WEAKNESSES • May lose grip on identity when overusing mimicry or disguise • Vulnerable to truth-speaking magic, oaths, or mirrored surfaces • Strong emotions can short-circuit their glamours • Struggles with directness or sincerity — deception is instinct • Some may be bound by ancient rules or trickster taboos (cannot lie thrice, cannot cross running water, etc.)
GUMIHO SPECIFIC • avoids dogs/dogs can sense they're fox spirits • fear of lightning/grass fires/heavenly fire • must abstain from killing or eating people to become human • feeds on livers, hearts or 'essence' and is what sustains illusions • said to target scholars, which symbolize moral order, rationality and patriarchal authority
WHAT BREAKS A TRANSFORMATION • tasting blood • the barking of or being bitten by a dog, especially a black one • revealing own identity as a fox
HOW THIS MANIFESTS WITH SEONGHAE • her innate predilection to do good will sway her from outright targeting the people she deems nice when seized by trickster/gumiho influences • for anyone she deems 'evil', she's unrepentant about using deception/seduction to lure them into unfavorable or dangerous situations • trickery for those she deems good is more like she's finding ways to create happiness, but in that very self-centered and assumptive way of 'i think this would make you happy'
- she does not feel the emotions of others intuitively, so emotional cues probably do not register automatically and has to be reasoned and thought out - defaults to her own perspective, which means she makes a lot of assumptions when piecing together emotional cues or situations - her values are correct! - everyone else's thoughts are secondary, usually - sense of obligation is principled, not relational (ethics is driven by ideals and internal logic rather than empathy) - principled without warmth - justice-oriented without mercy - sincere without sensitivity
what she's not: - a sadist - a nihilist - randomly violent - greedy or opportunistic
she can be considered a high functioning (ideological) psychopath but isn't a textbook case because she has: - low affective empathy - shallow emotional response - lack of remorse or guilt - instrumental treatment of others - moral reasoning detached from emotional cost while lacking: - manipulation for pleasure or gain - grandiosity / dominance-seeking
